How to Choose a Troubled Youth Boarding School for Your Troubled Teen

It’s no secret that the teenage years are difficult. This is the time when teenagers are constantly reconciling what their peers think of them, versus what they think of themselves. Sometimes, this confusion leads to terrible consequences, and sending teens to youth treatment centers┬ámay be necessary.

In a youth treatment center, the teenager first undergoes a basic test to determine which program is the most appropriate for him or her. The center’s staff may then meet with the parents, along with their child, to set specific goals for the child to achieve at the end of the treatment. These centers usually offer counseling on top of the conventional academic programs offered in schools. With the growing number of centers available, parents need to select the best one for their child.

Evaluate the needs of your child

Determine if your child really needs to be sent to a troubled youth center. Ask yourself questions like “Are my best efforts to keep my child in line no longer working?” and “Is my child consistently posing a serious risk to the well-being of others?” If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, your child may need to undergo some counseling and rehabilitation.

Look for centers that specialize in your child’s condition

The troubled youth boarding school parents recommend offers services that treat a wide variety of problems. However, some centers are better at treating certain problems than others. For instance, if your child has a serious drinking problem, you should send him or her to a center that has good programs that treat this addiction. If you’re in doubt, ask for recommendations from other parents of troubled teens.

Look for licensed or accredited centers

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), and the Council on Accreditation (COA) are just a few of the agencies that may accredit different youth treatment centers. Make sure that the center’s personnel are licensed according to the laws of your state. Logan River Academy in Logan, Utah is an example of a center accredited by the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP).

Take note of the center’s success rate

The troubled youth boarding school you choose may have the “best” personnel, programs, and facilities, but if you don’t see concrete results, it’s better to send your child to another place. You may research for alumni and their success stories. Don’t forget to look for youth rehabilitation centers that give you a good idea of the “next step”. Both entering and exiting the treatment center requires adjustment on your child’s part. Who knows, your child may be the next success story.
