Residential Services

Logan River Academy is among the most trusted residential treatment centers that offer an effective residential program. The residential program functions in a “boundary model” using staff to model appropriate behavior and be involved in directly assisting students. The boundary structure addresses the difficulty and frustrations students have in living in a system of rules and structure. Another aspect of the boundary model is to assist our students in developing personal boundaries and recognizing and respecting those set by others.

At the core of our “boundary model” is the well tested and researched cognitive behavioral approach. This concept utilizes a logical process type of intervention between staff and students, and between students and students, to dialogue and gain insight into their attitudes, thinking process and resulting behaviors. It provides a framework of accountability and self directed change at an individualized rate for each student as their insight grows.

A level system incorporating eight levels is utilized to help model society. The beginning levels are somewhat explicit with the higher levels being more ambiguous. This approach models society and helps students achieve greater self-confidence and the ability to make choices on their own without needing constant supervision or prompting to stay on task. It also generalizes to life after Logan River in that students will likely find themselves in systems that provide them with rules. If they choose to follow those rules, they will have success or if they choose not to follow those rules, they will experience setbacks.

Each staff member of our Residential Services Department is fully trained and certified in CPR, first aid, management of aggressive behavior, adolescent growth and development, and all other necessary skills. Prior to hiring, staff members are subjected to screening and background checks to make sure they are appropriate for employment at the Academy. The staff members of our residential treatment facility are carefully selected in order to have individuals who maintain a personal life style consistent with the Academy’s goals and have a desire to be positive role models for our students. We are aware of the responsibility we have in respectfully caring for each student and creating a helpful and healing process for growth.

Recreational

At our residential treatment facility, our students are involved in three types of activities:

  1. Adventure Learning activities are typically theme-orientated groups run in the context of a challenging experiential activity, such as hiking, camping, white water rafting, and other high-task adventures. These activities reduce defense mechanism, evoke anxiety and emotions, require skill development, and provide tangible metaphors for therapeutic issues.
  2. Diversionary/incentive activities serve as rewards for progress and provide opportunities for students to participate in appropriate, fun, leisure activities. Students are involved in a variety of activities ranging from movies and pizza to snowboarding and skiing.
  3. Organized sports and routine fitness activities are available in the appropriate season. They may include soccer, basketball, softball, volleyball, weightlifting, aerobics, yoga, and other similar activities. The Academy currently competes in soccer and softball leagues which are coached by qualified staff members.
