Services
Therapy
Our students have seen numerous benefits from actively participating in our therapy program. Clinical services include a variety of treatment modalities which are utilized to help each student achieve an improved level of functioning, diminish symptoms, and become productive members of their families and communities. We use evidence-based therapy models and techniques to help our students reach their full potential. A majority of what we do therapeutically comes from a Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) perspective. These types of therapy create a goal-oriented setting where our students feel supported by each other and by the adults supporting them. We also use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Brainspotting techniques to help students process trauma and relieve psychological stress. We use individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, and experiential therapy. In addition, medication may be recommended when appropriate to enhance treatment and reduce symptoms.
As your child enters Logan River Academy, they are assigned a primary therapist. This therapist will provide individual, family, and group therapy. The clinical team has several therapists that will also provide group therapy for your child. All of our therapists have a master’s degree or higher and are licensed in their clinical areas, allowing us to provide the highest quality of care for your child.
Individual Treatment Plan
Based on the specific needs of your child, an Individual Treatment Plan will be developed to guide the treatment process at Logan River Academy. This is created with input from you, your child, your educational consultant (if you are working with one), previous mental healthcare providers, and the assessments completed at Logan River Academy. The Individual Treatment Plan is a dynamic tool that identifies specific treatment areas and goals to be addressed during their time at Logan River Academy.
Individual Therapy
Our students receive individual therapy, consisting of one-on-one sessions with their primary therapist. Each student typically has one individual therapy session per week. If we see that it will benefit the student, they may receive more than one session per week. This is based on need, situation, and individual circumstances. The care your loved one will receive at Logan River Academy is highly individualized, meaning they will get the care they need.
Family Therapy
Family therapy is an essential component to your child’s success and occurs once a week. The majority of families with a child attending Logan River Academy reside outside of Utah. This often means that telephone conference calls or video conferencing are the best options for these family therapy sessions. When parents come for visits, our therapists and students look forward to face-to-face family therapy sessions. These sessions are a key part of the overall therapeutic program and contribute to your child’s success with their treatment goals. Family involvement is critical to effective treatment.
Group Therapy
Students participate in at least two group therapy sessions per week. Group topics may include and range from digital addiction, adoption issues, anger management, stress management, and/or family issues. Every student has a dorm group each week that is led by a therapist. This group focuses on issues and needs pertaining to each dorm. This helps to promote a functional and caring community of students who gain skills to work through issues as they happen. We believe in offering our students as many of the available tools possible for them to succeed. We’ve seen great success in our students’ lives through our group therapy practices.
Psychiatric Services
Every student enrolled at Logan River Academy will receive a psychiatric assessment from a Psychiatrist or licensed psychiatric nurse practitioner. This will include a DSM diagnosis, which allows us to create the best treatment plan. Based on this assessment, and the ongoing observations of the psychiatric practitioner and treatment team, the frequency of appointments will be determined to best fit each student’s needs. Each student will see the psychiatric practitioner at least monthly. Like all clinical services, this is designed to meet each individual’s needs of your child.
Visits
Visits with family are an important part of the therapeutic process. The clinical needs of your child and your family guide the treatment team’s recommendations for visits. Visits generally progress from on-campus, off campus, local overnight, out of the area overnight, and finally, home. We value visits and view them as essential clinical interventions where students and parents practice skills they are learning. When your child is residing with us, our clinical professionals work with parents as a functioning team to provide the best treatment possible.
DART (Digital Addiction Recovery Treatment)
Logan River Academy’s DART (Digital Addiction Recovery Treatment) program offers a treatment approach for adolescents and their families whose lives are being run by an addiction to digital media. We utilize a harm-reduction model that strives to provide digitally addicted adolescents with the support and resources they need to bring balance back to their digital lives.
The DART program functions as a track within Logan River Academy’s treatment program. The primary therapist works with each student to assess and evaluate the level of their addiction and formulate treatment goals. Digital addiction treatment interventions are incorporated throughout the daily program at school, on the dorm, and in individual and group therapy. As participants progress they have the opportunity to begin visits with their families and put their work into practice. As participants move towards completion of the program, they are supported and held accountable to avoid high-risk situations, utilize continued support, and engage with the digital world in a healthy and balanced manner.

School
Students at Logan River Academy come to us with a variety of academic issues and need varying levels of academic support that we can provide for them. Some come from prestigious boarding schools, others from wilderness programs or other residential treatment centers, and the rest from a public or private school background. A common pattern we find with our students is a previous difficult experience performing academically/socially in their former school. There are many reasons why your child could be struggling in school, but one fact is certain: specialized education and attention will improve their ability to succeed in school.
Logan River Academy offers this specialized education and attention to our students that struggle with academics. We provide the needed educational interventions and structure to give students a foundational starting point to begin, or simply rediscover, their academic success. Our school is designed to provide a positive experience for each student as they navigate through their education. A student’s day typically consists of a guided studies class in addition to three curriculum classes. The guided studies class is designed to help students fix and finish assignments and receive the support they need to be successful in school.
We offer three different curriculum delivery options: Teacher Directed classes, Teacher Monitored classes, and Teacher Supported classes.
Teacher Directed Classes: These classes are designed, taught and evaluated by a certified teacher on campus. They follow the Utah State Curriculum with associated objectives developed to meet the individual needs of our students.
Teacher Monitored Classes: These classes are conducted via an online source and monitored and evaluated by a certified teacher on campus. They follow the Utah State Curriculum, with objectives developed by the online program to meet the need of the student in a technology-based environment.
Teacher Supported Classes: These classes are independent study courses that are offered by Brigham Young University or other accredited institutions. These classes are intended to help students meet graduation requirements and to enhance educational opportunities and interests.
We’ve seen our students succeed and minimize academic issues through this program structure. Improvement breeds positive academic self-esteem. Advancement through this program provides a tool kit of skills for our students that can be used to further their educational pursuits.
Dorm Life
At Logan River Academy we have an overarching philosophy that we call the Principles-Based Model. This model is based on the 5 Principles for Effective Living: Honesty, Respect, Accountability, Fairness, and Caring. These guiding principles guide how we train our team, how we work with our students, and what we expect our students to learn while here. We believe that as a student learns, incorporates, and internalizes these principles, they will find great success.
Each staff member of our Residential Services Department is fully trained and certified in CPR, first aid, crisis intervention, adolescent growth and development, and all other necessary skills. Prior to hiring, staff members are subjected to screening and background checks to make sure they are appropriate for employment at Logan River Academy. The staff are carefully selected in order to have individuals who maintain a personal lifestyle consistent with Logan River Academy’s goals and have a desire to be positive role models for our students. We are aware of the responsibility we have in respectfully caring for each student and creating a helpful and healing process for growth.
Adventure Learning
Students are involved in a variety of fun and exciting activities–seeing beautiful sites and enjoying a variety of opportunities including mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, white water rafting, hiking, camping, horseback riding, golf, tennis, soccer, weightlifting, running, softball, Frisbee golf, and many more. Through the Adventure Learning program, students also have the opportunity to participate in several service projects such as volunteering at the local homeless shelter, humane society, and serving at the community garden. Adventure learning activities offer challenging and rewarding recreational experiences that help students expand their horizons and learn new skills that will hopefully translate into lifelong healthy lifestyles. Some activities are therapeutic in nature, while others are strictly for fun and skill building.
